A huge Mulberry tree is the focus for views from this extension in Brunswick to the north of central Melbourne. As the tree is set in a north-facing garden, it was an ideal oppotunity to orient the Living space toward the winter sun, especially when the tree provides such good shade for summer. But just as striking as the natural setting is the room itself, almost circular in plan with a magnificent fireplace surrounded by Mexican terra cotta tiles and topped with a mantle shelf for the display of art objects. Long Sunday lunches are a pleasure in this quiet corner of the city. And as the evening falls the concealed lighting in a sculptured form on the ceiling spreads a subtle glow in the room.
Colours are a luscious combination of fresh leaf green, cool grey and deep yellow and orange hues in the timber floor, clay tiles and cedar frames.
